Quick Tip

Today's Quick Tip is how to finish a novel that you don't like.  So... you started a novel and don't like it? Maybe you don't like it so much you just want to stop reading right that very second?  Well... Don't! Push yourself to finish a book.  You never know, you might end up loving it by the end!  Plus you can reward yourself for finishing something you didn't want to do/like.... yay!  There are plenty of novels of my list of favs that did not start out as favs, but ended as one.  Give the characters and plot a chance to grow on you like the taste of coffee (which I still don't like).  By the end, if you still don't like it... at least you can say you have read it, finished it and have an opinion about it.  Happy Reading!

This is interesting. I have a completely different take on it. I want a writer to grab me in the first five pages. If s/he doesn't, sometimes I don't go any further. But I am really old and figure life's too short to finish bad books.

I think what freaks me out the most about a good finished novel isn't so much that I like it now, but rather that I'll like it now and hate it when I'm 70. :)

Cindy - I have a lot of patience with books. :)

Sean - So true! Some of my old favs are definitely not anymore.

I think I learn almost as much from novels I don't like as the ones I love--if I pick apart the reasons it doesn't work for me, I can avoid the same pitfalls in my own writing.
