ANSA #38

Welcome everyone to the thirty-eighth Authors Not-So-Anonymous weekly meeting!!  This weekly series is about authors from Twitter and Facebook!  This week, I would like to introduce Robb Skidmore into Authors Not-So-Anonymous!

Robb Skidmore is a mixed genre fiction Indie author.  He traveled throughout America with his wife for an entire year, love music, and loves to travel.  "I love traveling, particularly to places in Asia. I am a music fanatic with a large CD collection. I once spent a year traveling around America with my wife and camping in national parks. In Kings Canyon National Park a bear tried to rip the door off our car because it smelled food in the back seat. We chased it away."

"My work, like most fiction, tends to have elements of different genres.  But if I had to choose I would say Adult Upmarket Contemporary, though my novel The Pursuit of Cool is arguably New Adult.  It is a coming-of-age story with elements of romance, humor, and social perspective in it. Upmarket is in between literary and commercial.  It has the original characters of literary and the plotted narrative drive of commercial."

He began writing in college as a secret hobby and way of venting.  "It was a way of expressing my emotions and processing the world and it became a creative form of expression I really enjoyed.  After college I started writing short stories and attending fiction workshops and read lots of books on writing and screenwriting."  His writing is inspired by the people around him and the curiosities of life itself.  "Writing fiction is still my way of processing the world, the same as when I scribbled in wire bound journals. Also, I enjoy the creative process of discovering and building a story with its characters. I find it challenging and satisfying."

Robb began his own publishing imprint, TMiK Press, to self-publish his work under.  "My short stories have appeared in several publications including New Orleans Review, New Millennium Writings, South Carolina Review, Oasis, and Twelve Stories.  I had some interest from literary agents in my novel, The Pursuit of Cool, but I decided to self-publish because I wanted to release it according to my own time frame and in my own way.  The novel was a Quarter Finalist in the 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest and was awarded an “IndieReader Approved” badge from IndieReader.com."  It's hard enough being an Indie author, can you imagine creating your own publishing imprint and writing?!

In April of 2012, Robb released his latest novel The Pursuit of Cool.  "It is about having the courage to be true to yourself, and separating external forces from your own internal truth."

Book Description:

Lance is a prep school guy who has ten identical pairs of khaki pants. He is from a family of super achievers and is intent on being a big success in college and life. But he is also easily distracted, a procrastinator, and obsessed with music and movies. He thinks he knows what he wants then questions his ambitions when he meets a punk rock actor, Ian LaCoss, and a subversive scholar, Charles Boyd.

He has a deeply romantic nature and though inept he is sincere and falls in love easily. He desperately wants to understand the feminine other. He’s a guy both men and women can relate to. He discovers emotional complexities as relationships with a beautiful psych major, Lynn Van Oster, and a feisty goth girl, Veronica Boyer shape and change him. The story comes alive with music and movies which give Lance solace as he questions his beliefs and deals with heartbreak. He tries to capture that illusive quality, that magic of youth, the essence that is "cool."

You can purchase a copy of The Pursuit of Cool on...

Follow Robb on his website.  This will be the last ANSA meeting.  I hope everyone has enjoyed the series!  Happy Reading!

The Red Serpent Trilogy!

Welcome to The Red Serpent Trilogy blog tour!  Today I have a chapter 1 excerpt, a giveaway, and the extended book description!  Follow the entire tour by clicking here.

Description:
“The evils of the World in which Anaxagoras shall come will be caused by the unworthy people of the world. Our race shall come unto the Earth and bravely wage war with them . . .”

In 2021, the Vampires attacked Earth and decimated the human population. After a fierce and bloody battle, war commander John Howe led the forced evacuation of the humans to the gigantic orbiting space station Regnum, and the human refugees have been there ever since.

Then one day, General Howe’s orphan nephew, Alexander, uncovers a terrible secret about his past — and that he may be the subject of prophesy.

“Two decades later, a new kind of evil, a Falsifier, shall come unto the Earth . . .”

The boy’s world is turned upside down when Gareng, the Vampiric General, reveals his own family ties to Alexander. As the two grow closer, Gareng begins to question the wisdom of his people waging Vampiric war on the humans. But Gareng’s own son will stop at nothing to seize control and eliminate the humans once and for all . . .

“There will be a second coming of Anaxagoras, when the sun is blocked by the moon . . .”

After learning his true origins, Alexander finds himself in an impossible situation: he must choose whether his allegiance lies with his mother’s people, or with his father’s — and condemn the other to certain doom.

“In the End of Days, the Falsifier shall challenge Anaxagoras for the fate of the world...”

But migra is thicker than water, and as Alexander embraces his role as Falsifier, he begins to hope that there could be another way.

Can Alexander forge a peace between the two warring factions — could he and Gareng ever convince the Vampires to agree — or will prophecy reach its bloody final chapter as Earth is plunged again into unrelenting war?

Of Time and Place Blog Tour!

WELCOME to the Of Time and Place blog tour everyone!  I have a very special treat for you today - an excerpt from Chapter 1 AND a giveaway!

Book Summary:
As the global energy crisis of the 21st century wears on, James Lendeman searches for answers – both for the country and for himself.

Working in the Federal Energy Department for the iconoclastic and enigmatic Kate Hastings, James is at the center of a world of political intrigue and personal conflicts. Unsure of whether he can go along with Kate’s plans for the country (and for him), he is forced to steer his own way through a maze of personal and professional problems.

When we meet James a few years later (through an ingenious weaving of dual timelines), he is in Savannah, working as a contractor for the government and debating the merits of a flirtatious college student who lives in his boarding house.

Nimbly moving forward and backward through James’s personal timeline, Of Time and Place leads its readers on a journey through the twists and turns of life in a kind of historical novel of the future. From a tumultuous romance and marriage to a romantic spring in Florence and the adversities along the way, James finds himself debating both his own life and the feasibility of maintaining a viable US economy in the mid-21st century.

Drawn from very real issues of global import, and playing out in some of the most storied cities in the world, Of Time and Placewill leave every reader pondering the future – and the present.

ANSA #37

Welcome everyone to the thirty-seventh Authors Not-So-Anonymous weekly meeting!! This weekly series is about authors from Twitter and Facebook!  This week, I would like to introduce Larry and Karen  Buchanan into Authors Not-So-Anonymous!

Larry and Karen are the author of The Gift of El Tio, a nonfiction memoir.  The two began writing at different times, but worked on the same memoir.  Karen - " I began writing our memoir about fourteen years ago with the specific goal of documenting the changes in an indigenous village in Bolivia that was moved so that a mine could be developed.  Prior to that, I wrote professional reports."  Larry - " I published about a dozen technical articles in geological trade journals, but The Gift of El Tio is my first memoir."

Karen's writing inspiration comes from "...social/political events in my life that evoke my concern for others.  When I learned that my husband’s silver discovery meant a Quechua village would be destroyed, I felt it was our moral obligation to chronicle the impact of the changes in these villagers’ lives."  Larry is inspired by his oil painting - "I could make a scene come alive with just a few tubes of oil.  Then I discovered I could do the same with words."

New Plan?!

Yeah...like this.
Recently I've been debating on discontinuing the weekly ANSA posts.  After discussions on Twitter and through email with J.Scott Sharp, I have decided to take a little break from ANSA posts.  Before everyone freaks out, gets angry, cries, moans, or squeals in pain... know that you have two more weeks of ANSA posts before they will be discontinued (that's the rest of September).

I'll explain my decision...

Why are you doing this?
1. The ANSA posts are the least *clicked on* posts each week on my blog.
2. I'm not getting enough support from everyone involved to continue these posts.  They take me at minimum of two hours to write each week.  It's not as easy as it looks.
3. It's been like pulling teeth to get authors to sign up for the Oct-Dec slots.  I can't get a single person to fill those slots and I've asked over 30!
4. The comment section has gotten too quiet on the ANSA posts.  Scares me.
5. I love writing them, but nobody seems to be reading them (except the select few I know read them weekly).
6. Simply because, I think it's time for a change.

They're hhheeerrrreeee!!!

If you haven't heard yet, then I'm going to tell you now... (in case you've been stuck in a good book for the past week and ignoring Amazon's website like the plague)

There are FIVE new Kindles joining the family!!!!!

I am incredibly excited, and cannot wait to hear actual reviews of these devices once they release (October 2012).  The much anticipated release of the eReaders has been talked about for quite a while on the Kindle forums, but now they are real and can be pre-ordered or purchased.

Stories Brought to Life

So many of authors dream to have their work brought to life on the *big screen*.  They want their passion to be seen and enjoyed by as many as possible.  By turning books into television shows, a lower cost option than a movie, authors can fulfill their dreams.  I love watching a book being *read* to me on the television screen, seeing how the director and (possibly) the author wanted the book to look.  Here are nine novel series that have been turned into television series.

Grimm Fairytales - loosely turned into the show Grimm (also based on several other novels).

Pretty Little Liars - turned into the popular show Pretty Little Liars.

ANSA #36

Welcome everyone to the thirty-sixth Authors Not-So-Anonymous weekly meeting!! This weekly series is about authors from Twitter and Facebook!  This week, I would like to introduce Cinsearae Santiago. into Authors Not-So-Anonymous!

Cinsearae is an adult author who began writing in the third grade with short stories.  "It was a simple assignment, to make up a short story using the vocabulary words we were given for that week.  There were only a few lines on the page we had to fill, but I kept on going, flipping the paper over and continuing until I had the entire side covered in my scribble.  The next day, I saw that the teacher had rewritten my story on one of those ginormous pieces of paper often used in most elementary schools, with “A++ Superior!” written across it.  When my classmates realized it was mine, I got quite a few dirty looks.  I was happy for the grade, but embarrassed just the same.  I was already an outcast in school as it was."

After that exciting yet traumatic experience, she kept the majority of her writing tucked away until her freshmen year of college in the 90s.  "I decided to let some of my writing see the light of day and tried my hand at submitting my poetry and short stories to small press magazines. While doing this, there were hits and misses, and the waiting process was pretty frustrating as it was, not to mention the arrogant, high-and-mighty attitudes of some of the editors. When I started learning more and more about writers such as myself having a hard time with getting their work published, it fueled the fire to start my own magazine, “Dark Gothic”, to help those same writers and myself."  She printed and stapled each copy herself.  After a two year hiatus, Dark Gothic was revived and renamed "Dark Gothic Resurrected."

Review Day: Pledged!

It's Review Day!!!!!!!!!

Title: Pledged
Author: Gwynneth White
My Rating: 5 stars

(description)
Everyone has a soul mate. But what do you do when your soul mate would rather give his soul to the demons than be with you?

Seventeen-year-old Erin has a problem. Seth has been hers forever, but now an ancient promise is tearing him away. And Reuel, the demon to whom the promise was made, will stop at nothing to force Seth to forsake Erin and to worship him.

How can Erin win against a pledge so binding that it has damned countless others to the same fate she and Seth will face if Reuel wins – an eternity alone?

The answer lies in the past. To find it, Erin and Seth must risk all, travelling back in time to a dangerous world where love is forbidden, and life – and death – hang on a promise.

Follow Erin and Seth as they travel to ancient Shenaya to break the pledge that has plagued their families for millennia. Caught in a war between the Angelic Guardians and the Gefallen, the disembodied dead, they must fight to keep their souls in tact and their love untainted. (end)

eReader How To: Organizing Your Ebooks (part 2)

After the first "Organizing Your Ebooks" post, I decided that I would show you exactly how I organize mine.  I was asked by several people on Twitter, through email and on Facebook what my Kindle Collections look like, so here they are!

I basically organize my ebooks based on what I found was going to be the most helpful for me.  These might not be exactly what you need, but I hope it helps!  I first started with dividing everything by genre, then added in a few other collections (such as TBR, for review and apps) that were miscellaneous collections.
  • Ebooks for Review
    • This collection has any ebooks in it that I plan to review over the next 3 months.  When I'm done reading it, I remove it from my device.
  • Children's/YA
    • In this collection, you will find everything from Beatrix Potter up to The Soul Screamers series.  I try to keep it limited to anything that is age appropriate for anyone under 17.
  • Novellas/ShortStory
    • This is the most helpful collection to have.  I use this one when I need something quick to read during a lunch break, in between classes, or just because I'm looking for something short.

ANSA #35

Welcome everyone to the thirty-five Authors Not-So-Anonymous weekly meeting!! This weekly series is about authors from Twitter and Facebook!  This week, I would like to introduce Gwynneth White into Authors Not-So-Anonymous!

Gwynneth White is from South Africa, has a degree in African History and Politics, is a mother, a wife and full time writer.  She is a fiction and non-fiction author who is currently writing YA fantasies and co-writing a travel memoir with her husband.  "I’ve been telling myself stories for as long as I can remember, but it was only in my teens that I started writing my first novel.  I never finished it.  But the love of writing didn’t leave me. So over the years I’ve written advertising copy and corporate training manuals.  Dead boring, trust me.  I also co-authored two non-fiction travel books.  Then four years ago inspiration struck, and I started writing a series of fantasy young adult book.  I haven’t stopped."

Gwynneth draws her inspiration from the Bible.  "Strangely, I find a great deal of inspiration from scripture. Those dusty old biblical people are so real to me, and the dilemmas they face so universal.  It’s very easy for me to translate those challenges into a modern setting, using ordinary people like us to carry my stories. Does that mean I am a religious writer? Definitely not."
