Review Day: The Hunger Games trilogy (updated)

This is a review of the trilogy, The Hunger Games.  If you haven't heard yet, there is a movie coming to theaters March 23, 2012! Yay!! It's being called the *next* Twilight saga. (cough LIES cough) But let me tell you, if it is anything at all like the books, it will be better.

I just hope I can go see the movie without people thinking I'm there for the *hunky* male actors (seriously.. they're not that cute...pix here just with different hair colors for the actual movie). Besides.. when I see Josh Hutcherson all I can think of is the boy from Bridge to Terrabithia (the movie).  See? See!?  Same boy.  Now how many people are mad at me for ruining him?

Descriptions provided by The Hunger Games Trilogy Fansite and Suzanne Collins  If I write my own... there will be too many spoilers.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (book one)
5 stars
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlaying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one girl and one boy between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. But Katniss has also resolved to outwit the creators of the games. To do that she will have to be the last person standing at the end of the deadly ordeal, and that will take every ounce of strength and cunning she has.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (book two)
4 1/2 stars
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

MockingJay by Suzanne Collins (book three)
4 1/2 stars
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12.

All three of these novels are phenomenal.  I couldn't put them down! It took me a week to get through three novels.  I borrowed them from a friend on Kindle, and couldn't wait for the "Your Kindle eBook Has Arrived!" email every time!  The characters, plot, scenarios pull you in so deep and keep you there.  You're longing for more at the end of each one, just as a fish needs water you need these books.  They make your imagination run wild in ways most adults/YA minds haven't done for years!  I can't recommend these books enough.  Once you get past the initial shock of the situation, and realize what is really happening (pretty quickly might I add) then these books become irresistible.

If you want to be an obsessive fan like me... then go visit the site here.  The fan site does giveaways periodically so I highly recommend joining it (it's completely free).  They also have more details and behind-the-scene information about the upcoming movie! Want to be part of the Hunger Games? Go here! They assign you a district and everything! Let me know what District you get! I'm in District 7! Happy Hunger Games Review Day!!

Review Day: Your Heart Belongs to Me

It's review day!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook...then you may have read that I recently finished Dean Koontz's Your Heart Belongs to Me.  I read this in print form, the first paperback novel I have read since I have owned my Kindle.  Well... after I gave it a more than unfavorable rating, many many people asked for a full review. So.. here it is!

Author: Dean Koontz
Title: Your Heart Belongs To Me
My Rating: 2 stars out of 5
Would I recommend this book? No

Amazon Book Description:
At thirty-four, Internet entrepreneur Ryan Perry seemed to have the world in his pocket -- until the first troubling symptoms appeared out of nowhere. Within days, he’s diagnosed with incurable cardiomyopathy and finds himself on the waiting list for a heart transplant; it’s his only hope, and it’s dwindling fast. Ryan is about to lose it all…his health, his girlfriend Samantha, and his life.

One year later, Ryan has never felt better. Business is good and he hopes to renew his relationship with Samantha. Then the unmarked gifts begin to appear—a box of Valentine candy hearts, a heart pendant. Most disturbing of all, a graphic heart surgery video and the chilling message: Your heart belongs to me.

In a heartbeat, the medical miracle that gave Ryan a second chance at life is about to become a curse worse than death. For Ryan is being stalked by a mysterious woman who feels entitled to everything he has. She’s the spitting image of the twenty-six-year-old donor of the heart beating steadily in Ryan’s own chest.

And she’s come to take it back.
(end description)

Sounds like a typical "DK" book right? A little mystery, a little "end of the world", a little romance, a little "that guy is poisoning that guy even though they are really good friends", a little bit of this, a little bit of that..

As an avid DK reader, I must say this novel really really disappointed me.  The plot was boring, dragged on and on and on and on and on and on...there were so many different possible story lines happening (which is usually a good thing from DK) that it just confused the reader.  He had so many choices for where the book could go, but I think he chose the wrong one.  I wanted to see more of the weirdo guy.  The it-can't-get-any-worse-than-this (but it always does) super creepy, bad guy character DK usually throws in there. But he didn't even make an appearance!! (sigh)

The ending... don't even get me started.  I re-read the ending searching for answers.  I don't think I have ever had to do that before with DK books.  It left me asking questions, begging to know what happened to plot line A and B, but the novel clearly didn't think they were important anymore.  They just vanished, *poof* GONE.  Like the pigeon in a magic trick.  The last chapter felt like it came out of left field.  I looked at the binding of my book to see if I was missing chapters!  (Sadly... I wasn't...)

What did I like from this book? The possibilities is held for something amazing. The fact that is was written by DK and I hadn't read it yet. That's it.

Happy Review Day!!

The Versatile Blogger Awards!

I was nominated by the lovely and wonderful SM Boyce! See her post here. I love this idea so...here goes!

Here's the plan....
  • Add the award image to your blog
  • Write down seven random facts about you
  • Nominate 15 bloggers and let them know! (the best part!!)
Hm... Seven random facts about me
I have more stuffed animals than the average 5 year old girl.

My favorite colors are orange and dark red. Especially together!
My sister took the picture.

<---- I have a healthy *obsession* with elephants. They're just so cute!!  This particular elephant is Shenga from the CM Zoo.

When I was in middle school, my parents let me design my own bedroom. I painted the walls bright yellow and the floor has (light...ish..) orange fuzzy carpet. And I Love It.

I can quote every single episode of The Big Bang Theory. Not that I'm a fan or anything.

I wrote a poem once that won an award, was published and made into a book along with 10 other young writer's poems.  If you guess the topic correctly, I'll give you a cookie!

Bluebells are my favorite flower.  My younger sister took the picture shown here for me.  She did an outstanding job!----->
